5 Things Great Interior Design Teaches You About Curb Appeal

As an interior designer, you already know a lot about what goes into creating incredible rooms and interior spaces. But can you actually transfer this knowledge to your home’s curb appeal? After all, you want the entire building to look fantastic.

Well, it turns out that you can. There are numerous things that great interior designers can pull from their experience and apply to the exterior of a house.

The Value Of First Impressions

One of the main lessons from interior design is that first impressions matter. It’s the overall sense that a person gets when they walk into a room that makes the biggest difference.

First impressions on the exterior of a home include things like how the entryway or the hall makes people feel, and whether it looks polished from the outside.

Roofing company, A&J Professional Services, gets clients all the time who want to brush up their home’s appearance. Often, something as counterintuitive as replacing the roof can make all the difference.

The Importance Of Balance

Interior designers also know that balance and symmetry are critical to great interior design. The same, though, is also true of a home’s exterior. Where things go are critical.

The idea here is to transplant what you might do in your interiors. For example, you might have an idea to put various accessories and candles on a mantlepiece. Obviously, you wouldn’t use the same objects outdoors, but you could do the same with plants around your entryway or when complementing your driveway. The idea is to avoid any specific feature from feeling excessively dominant while also creating more visual interest in the outdoor space.

The Value Of Layering

Another concept you can pinch from interiors to boost curb appeal is layering. The more options you stack on top of one another, the better.

In interiors, this looks like combining wood furniture with textiles, or using a combination of mirrors with lighting. You get the idea.

Outside, this is slightly different. For example, you could use home illumination spotlights in conjunction with siding, stone, and brickwork. Then you could add climbing plants, hanging baskets, and other features to make your property feel special.

The Criticality Of Focal Points

What about focal points? Those are also something you can use to improve your home’s curb appeal.

Focal points for interiors include things like fireplaces, chandeliers, artwork, and statement walls. These all grab the eye and allow the interior designer to formulate the rest of the room around them.

You can do something similar outdoors. For example, you could go for one of those Instagram-worthy brightly-painted British townhouse doors that everyone loves on social media. Or you could shrub-line your driveway and make it like a Yellow Brick Road to your property’s entrance.

The Value Of Purpose

Finally, you could give your outdoor spaces purpose, which is also something that your interiors have. For instance, you could adapt them for these reasons or make them into actual living spaces in their own right.
