The Search
As I began my search for internships, I prioritized finding an opportunity that would provide hands-on design experience, but more importantly, an environment where I could learn, grow and be challenged. I was looking for designers who were not only passionate about their careers, but created a welcoming atmosphere for clients and employees. When I found Nest with the Nelsons, I was immediately welcomed with open arms.
As an interior design student at Wayne State College, it was important that I found a good fit somewhere in my hometown. I was eager to see how the classroom lectures, labs and projects played out in the real world! As someone who has never doubted their career path, I am grateful to have joined a friendly and inclusive company like Nest with the Nelsons! My goal when joining Megan and her team was to get as much exposure to interior design as possible. What surprised me, however, was how much I would learn beyond design itself!
Meeting the Nelsons
When I first met Megan, her kindness and genuine curiosity about my interests immediately stood out. I quickly learned that her top priority is always the client. Throughout my time with Nest with the Nelsons, I have had the opportunity to attend both residential and commercial client meetings, allowing me to see how the design process works.
One thing I specifically love about Nest with the Nelsons is the range of the company. They are not limited to one type of project–they truly do it all. Megan’s kindness has allowed me to join her in her networking events and business meetings where I gained insight of life outside design. Interior design stretches far beyond the creation itself, but brings perspective to the busy work of business owners. Design is not only about selecting finishes and furnishing, but it is built on communication, relationships, and community involvement.
Our Progress
So far, I have helped the company refresh their Pinterest page, assisted with the launch of a brand new Amazon storefront, and participated in client meetings with homeowners, and business owners. Each experience has broadened my knowledge of the industry and reinforced my love for design. I enjoy being able to help make spaces functional as well as comfortable.
Although many opportunities lie ahead with my work as an intern, I have already gained a significant amount of experience that will help me as a future designer. I am beyond grateful for the privilege to work alongside Megan and her company! I am looking forward to growing as a person and designer!
