Say "I Do" to Gray Marriage

Say "I Do" to Gray Marriage

By: Camille Johnson of The Bereaver

Gray marriages are increasingly common, but that doesn’t mean you won’t face challenges. Senior couples have unique issues to navigate to ensure they can build a happy life together. If you’re part of a senior couple in Omaha, NE, that’s preparing to marry, here are some points to consider.

Combining Finances
By the time you reach retirement age, you’re usually pretty set in your ways regarding spending and saving. Since your money management style might not match your partners, you’ll need a plan for combining your finances.

In some cases, hiring a certified financial planner is a smart move. They can help you assess your financial situation, plan for joint obligations, and determine how best to mesh your financial lives. If you’re concerned about the future of your hard-earned estate, then adding an estate planner to the mix isn’t a bad idea. That way, you can get advice from a neutral third party, simplifying the process.

Choosing a Home
Nearly 79 percent of adults age 65+ own their homes. If you and your soon-to-be spouse have properties, you’ll need to figure out where you’ll live.

First, examine each home to determine if it can meet your current and future needs. If you’re among the 90 percent of adults aged 50 and up who prefer to age-in-place, you’ll need to determine if the home can adjust to mobility challenges or other issues that may arise.

Ideally, you’ll want to make sure that you can move forward with accessible home upgrades should they become necessary. If not, it may be able to start fresh by choosing a new house that you’ll move into together.

Moving Into a House Together
Once you decide where you’ll live, it’s time to move in together. If either of you lived alone for an extended period, there might be an adjustment period. Along with paring down excess belongings, you’ll need to make sure that both of you have a sense of ownership in the space. Plus, you might need to introduce touches to improve the overall function, ensuring both partners’ needs are met. Then, of course, there is the blending of your personal styles, which may take some compromise. Blending decor and design takes time and effort, particularly when you both have different ideas in mind. And, when you're in need of a little organization, the Morning Project of Omaha has you covered.

Hiring an interior designer is a smart move if you aren’t sure where to begin redecorating your home. Whether you’re updating a property one of your own or want to start fresh in a new house, Nest with the Nelsons can assist with interior design as well as ensuring that all of your combined possessions stay neat and organized. Planning for Future Health-Related Needs
Along with choosing a home that can adapt to your changing needs, you’ll want to consider other potential health-related challenges that may arise. Medical care is often costly, and you typically spend more in that area as you get older.

As you prepare to marry, examine all of your insurance options. Since Medicare doesn’t cover long-term care, you may want to look into private insurance to address that gap. It also doesn’t hurt to shop around if you have private insurance not tied to an employer. Consider which of the available plans best meet your joint needs, ensuring you can get cost-effective and comprehensive coverage.

There also may come a time when one or both of you may need to move into an assisted living facility. Since that could occur, it’s best to plan in advance. You’ll want to make a decision that fits your medical and lifestyle needs, as well as your budget. Spend time researching local communities now. When you find options with potential, take tours of facilities in Omaha and its surroundings. That way, you can figure out which options work best well before you need to move.

Aging in place, and combining households can be stressful. Make the transition easier with interior design services provided by Nest with the Nelsons. We are ready and here to help you with all of your design needs.
