Simple Ways to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Simple Ways to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal

What does your home’s curb appeal say about you? And when was the last time you paid attention to how the outside of the property looks? First impressions of people and how they live are often made before they even arrive at your home. And the outside will set the tone for the inside, even if the inside is vastly different.

So how do you bring things in line if they’re not already, and what can you do to improve your home’s curb appeal?

Start With The Front Door

Your front door is the focal point of your home’s exterior. It’s also one of the easiest things to update in terms of creating a significant visual impact. You can either give your front door a fresh coat of paint or varnish if it’s wooden. But make sure it’s in a color that complements the overall palette of the property rather than fighting it. The more cohesive the look, the more of an impact it will have.

Beyond the colour of the door, consider changing the hardware too. A new door handle, knocker, and house numbers in a consistent finish — brushed brass, matte black, or aged bronze — add a level of detail that elevates the whole entrance without requiring a full door replacement, that is, unless the door needs it, in which case a replacement is likely the right decision here.

Update Your Landscaping

Overgrown, neglected, or non-existent planting is one of the fastest ways for a home’s exterior to look uncared for, regardless of how well everything else is looked after. You don’t actually need a full landscape design to make a drastic improvement. All you need is some strategic changes, some well-placed plants, and clean edges.

Start by editing what is already there. Remove anything that is dead, overgrown, or out of scale with the rest of the space. Then define the edges of beds and borders cleanly. Layer in plants that provides structure, seasonal interest, and a sense of intention.

Aim for symmetry at the entrance — matching planters, matching standard trees or shrubs flanking the door, etc. This will create a polished look that reads well from the street.

Upgrade Your Garage Door

If you have a garage that is integrated into the front facade, the garage door is often one of the largest visual elements on the exterior. And for the most part, the garage doors are often larger than the front door. If you have an outdated, damaged, or poorly matched garage door, this can undermine the rest of the exterior, regardless of how well everything else matches.

Replacing a garage door is consistently cited as one of the best return on investment home improvements available, and some studies suggest the ROI is 90% of the cost at resale. But beyond the financial aspect, a new door that is well matched to the style and materials of your house makes an immediate and lasting improvement to your curb appeal.

Add Outdoor Lighting

Exterior lighting is one of the most transformative and most underused curb appeal tools you have at your disposal. A home that looks attractive in the daytime can disappear into the darkness, and if this is your home, you’re missing an opportunity to present your home in the best possible way at all hours.

And if you have frequent after-dark visitors or you live in an area with shorter daylight hours at certain times of the year, this will be a change that can make more of an impact than you might realize.

Wall-mounted lights flanking the front door provide symmetry and a welcoming quality at the entrance. Pathway lighting defines the route from the street to the door and adds safety alongside aesthetics, too.

You might find you prefer to have uplighters in planting beds or directed at architectural features to create drama and depth.

But whatever lighting option you choose for your external areas, the key is to choose fittings that are consistent in style and finish, assess the exterior, and make sure that the light temperature is warm rather than cool, as warm light is flattering to both people and architecture in a way cool white light isn’t.

Refresh Your Driveways and Pathways

The hard landscaping around your home, this is your driveway, pathways, and steps, takes up a significant portion of what people see from the street, and it is an area that gradually deteriorates in ways that are really easy to stop seeing on a daily basis. Cracks, staining, weeds pushing through things, and faded, uneven surfaces will subtract from the overall curb appeal.

The way to fix this can vary from a thorough pressure wash and reseal to repointing the joints between pavers, it might be patching and resealing asphalt, or in more damaged areas, replacing sections that have deteriorated beyond what maintenance can manage. Clean, well-maintained landscaping is the kind of detail people notice when they arrive at your home.
