Things I Notice in Your Home Within 5 Minutes

And no, I’m not judging your clutter. 😉

One of my favorite parts of being an interior designer is walking into someone’s home for the first time.

Within about five minutes, I can usually tell what is working, what isn’t, and where a few simple changes could make a BIG difference.

And here’s the thing: it’s rarely about having a “beautiful” house or buying more stuff.

Here are a few things I notice almost immediately:

1. The lighting

Is the room relying entirely on one overhead light? Are there lamps tucked into dark corners? Is the light warm and inviting or bright and…well, a little interrogation-room-ish?

Lighting can completely change how a room feels.

2. The furniture layout

I notice how easily you can move through the room.

Does the furniture encourage conversation? Is there enough breathing room? Is everything pushed against the walls simply because that’s where it has always been?

Sometimes moving a sofa six inches can make a room feel completely different.

3. The scale

This is a BIG one.

Is the rug too small? What about the coffee table — is it floating in the middle of the room? Is the artwork getting swallowed by a giant wall?

A room can have beautiful pieces and still feel “off” when the scale isn’t quite right.

4. The things you see first

Every room has a story.

When you walk in, what immediately catches your eye?

A beautiful fireplace? A gorgeous view? A pile of shoes? A television? 👀

I look for opportunities to create a focal point and make sure the eye lands where we want it to land.

5. What feels like YOU

This might be my favorite.

I notice the little things that tell me who lives there.

The family photos. The weird little thrifted find. The collection you’ve been building for years. The blanket everyone fights over.

Those are the things that make a house feel like home.

My job isn’t to erase those things.

It’s to help you build a space around them that feels intentional, beautiful, comfortable, and completely yours.

The good news?

You probably don’t need to redo your entire house.

You might just need to look at it with a fresh set of eyes.

That’s one of the things I love most about design. Sometimes the answer isn’t more.

It’s simply seeing what you already have in a different way.

And then you look around your house and think…
