Thought Provoking Design Questions from the Checkout Line
Big things are happening here at the Nelson household! Between prepping the house for our upcoming photoshoot with the amazing Nicole Ferguson of Nicole Fertography, finalizing plans for our daughter’s 1st Communion in April, and keeping everything else with our business and household afloat, things are HECTIC!
Hence, why I’m just now getting this email sent out … after midnight!
Harvey and I had a quick moment to swing by Hobby Lobby the other day. When we were in line checking out, a woman behind us commented on how much she liked the place settings in our cart. I so appreciated it, and was delighted with my selections – SCORE! I shared with her that they were for the table settings for our upcoming business photoshoot.
We continued chatting about Nest with the Nelsons, how our business came to be. Then she had some insightful questions about the interior design industry.
Questions like: “How did you get started in your business?”; “Where do you source your more luxury products?”; and, the one that really stuck with me – “Is Omaha behind in many of our home designs?”
I gave her last question a bit more thought before blurting out, YES! We’re totally behind the curve, design wise. As our conversation came to a close, I was reminded that what seems second nature to my everyday world of design is in fact NOT second nature to the general public.
So, some of my main takeaways from talking with the nice stranger in line that I think you will find helpful in your home design:
Gray is so gone!
Don’t paint with it, don’t add it to your curtains, and definitely DO NOT add it to any of your hard finishes such as backsplash, flooring, or tile. Just don’t do it. Say goodbye.
Design does not have to be expensive.
There’s a misconception that working with an interior designer is expensive. While that can be true, it’s simply not the case when you realize the amount of time, money, and energy saved. Hire a designer not for the price of their services, but for the SANITY that you’ll save by working alongside them. And, in this case – with me! 🙂
Don’t chase trends.
I know it’s tempting. Your next door neighbor just installed Taj Mahal quartzite – the fourth person on your street to make the plunge now. You think they look lovely in her house, but you’re not sure it’s totally your style. Don’t worry about what the current look or trends are. If you love something (or if you don’t!), it doesn’t matter how trendy it is – as long as you love it – and really love it, it will always be in style for you.
