When Your Home Feels Like Vacation

When your home feels like vacation, things just hit differently. This past week, we wrapped our primary bedroom refresh. This was a long time coming. As my husband, Matt, and I were talking about our room, we both confessed that there was nothing ‘wrong’ with our room before. But, it felt dated, a little lackluster, and it could be better. 

So, I started dreaming.

Just as I would for a client’s upcoming project. By the way, when I do this for our own home, Matt usually gets a little nervous. But, I can’t blame him – he probably should! 🙂 

We set out on a multi-month refresh that wasn’t extensive, but the results were totally transformational … in the best way possible. We had two goals in mind: 

• make our space look extremely different, and 
• do it on a conservative budget

We started with wall color.

If you’ve been following along for more than a minute, you likely know I have a thing for green. Not just any shade of green, but a dark, moody, and a touch muddy deep kind of green. From a handful of client projects from this past year, color drenching had huge results, all while being efficient with the budget. So, it was time to try out this new approach to color in our own home. And, I couldn’t be more excited to roll with this concept in our primary refresh.

The dark and moody green was applied to our walls with a matte finish. And, to fully achieve the color drenched look, we went with that same deep and moody green on the trim, the doors, and a portion of the ceiling – in a satin (slightly more glossy) finish . WAH?! I know!! 

This was a bold move with color drenching, and to address the ceilings, too, but so excited we really went for it. To top things off – literally – we added a warm, pecan toned wood finish to the ceiling to continue the warmth in our newly refreshed space. The ceiling is complete with a modern fan, and some great trim to keep it looking warm and a touch rustic. 

Then it was time for finishing decor and accessories – one of my all-time favorite aspects of a stellar project! We added a bunch of warm, cozy mid-tone brown pillows, a crazy cozy throw, and layered in some awesome new mid-century modern leaning light fixtures, along with a few new decor pieces sprinkled throughout. 

I may be biased

I may be biased, but the results were absolutely stunning! From the wall color, the overall deep and saturated color drenching, the beautiful wood ceiling feature, and all the added warm textures and layers – our primary suite now feels like a private retreat. Never have I ever felt like I was on vacation in my own home … especially not with three energetic, loud, and fun kids – but today, waking up to our new room, I absolutely feel like I just woke up on vacation. 

And, the best part? Our project hovered around the $500-$600 mark for our all-in refresh. Special thanks to my father-in-law for all of his sweat equity to make the labor affordable, and I’d say a total hit!
