5 Steps to Feng Shui Your Home

By: Megan Healy, Strategic Communications and Brand Management Intern, Nest with the Nelsons

We’ve all been there: the room could be the cleanest it’s ever been, but something is still off. You love your furniture, you hand picked the décor, but there’s something not quite clicking. It’s a frustrating process trying to figure out what you could do to make the room better. Hint: buying more throw pillows will not solve this problem, trust me. So, introducing Feng Shui, the Chinese art of moving objects into a space that will create the most balance within the room.

Come Again?
Feng Shui is one of the oldest forms of art and is used within just about every aspect of your day-to-day life. How your hometown is arranged, how a school is laid out, and more importantly, how furniture is arranged within a home to achieve a harmonic energy within your space. Think Yin and Yang, and how with all things, balance is absolutely necessary. Pay close attention to spaces that you can spot Feng Shui and notice what a difference it would make if things were not laid out for a purpose. Feng Shui focuses on energy, and believe it or not, every single object in your home has an influence on the energy of the room. Learning how to master Feng Shui, which anyone can do, will make a drastic difference in your life and your home.

The Benefits
So, is it worth it? Absolutely! This is a method that does not require any extra spending, and little time out of your day to learn. Feng Shui promotes good health, balance, and an overall energized feeling to the room. And if we’ve learned anything since March of 2020, it's that being in a room with poor Feng Shui can affect your entire mood. Designing a room to its fullest potential will have a real effect on life and will make you enjoy every room in the house again. It’s no fun having that one room that you tend to avoid, just because even thinking about trying to manage it brings on a headache. We get it. Take the time out of your day to watch this video about Feng Shui and how you can directly apply it to your life.

The Rules
There are five rules for Feng Shui.

1. Be organized. Easier said than done, we know. This is an easier rule to follow after your room is positioned just the way you like it.

2. Keep the bed away from the window. Waking up to direct sunlight can be nice, but the idea behind this is that your bed can have a solid support unit behind it. The window cannot offer that, and in Feng Shui, this actually affects how well you sleep.

3. Separate your rest areas from your work areas. You should be comfortable while you work, but working in bed is a recipe for disaster. Not only will this lessen the amount of work you will accomplish, but you will also start to associate your work stress with that area, creating a poor sleep environment.

4. Use the Bagua Map properly. The what now? Click the link to learn more about what this is, and how you can use it!

5. Know your colors. We have a couple blogs on the trend colors for each season, as well as what colors pair well with each other. Color combinations are huge in the Feng Shui method!

And, if you’re still stumped, you know who you can call. Not the GhostBusters this time, but Nest with the Nelsons! We’re here to help every step of the way to achieve the most beautiful, relaxed, and cozy version of your home.
